Hyperkin is making a new Genesis system called the Mega RetroN HD
Could this be the 'clone' system that finally gets Genesis sound emulation right?
Over the past week, the internet has been a buzz with talk of Retro-bit manufacturing Dreamcast and Saturn accessories, and even some rumors floating around that they might even announce a Dreamcast or Saturn plug-and-play system.
One piece of news that flew under the radar, however, is Hyperkin quietly announcing a new Genesis/Mega Drive system – called the Mega RetroN HD.

Hyperkin posted the above image on its Facebook page on Jan. 10, and little is actually known about the system as it’s not listed on Hyperkin’s website, nor could we find a press release online announcing its presence.
Looking through the comments on the photo, Hyperkin responded to a question regarding the system by saying, “We just announced the MegaRetroN HD! We haven’t announced a release date for the RetroN 77 and the Mega yet. Stay tuned for more updates on our newest consoles in development!”
While we don’t know the system’s exact specifics, we can probably expect it to be comparable to Hyperkin’s SupaRetroN HD, which retails for about $70 and has an HDMI out that outputs at 720p, with a toggle switch on the back that can switch from 4:3 to 16:9 aspect ratio. The unit is powered by micro-USB and also has a switch on the bottom of the unit that can switch between PAL and NTSC cartridges.
Unlike AtGames’ Genesis Flashback HD, the Hyperkin systems don’t typically come with pre-installed games – they just play cartridges. It will be interesting to see the system actually running Genesis games to see if Hyperkin can manage to get the sound emulation correct, something that AtGames hasn’t been able to achieve with 100-percent accuracy as of yet.
We’ll be sure to update you with more information about the Mega RetroN HD as soon as we get it. In the meantime, let us know what you think of the system and what you’d like to see from the unit!

The Retron 5 covers Genesis emulation almost 100%. At this point we need a Saturn, SEGA CD, or 32X capable system, not more Mega Drive/Genesis consoles. Derp.
The Polymega system is probably going to be the closest thing you’re going to get for SEGA CD and/or 32X support in a third-party.

seeing how they haven’t posted since last year, fat chance.
They have repeatedly stated there is a reason for their silence, that they cannot discuss it right now, and that Polymega is still 100% in development.
Their Twitter is actively replying to people. Their last reply was yesterday.
so reassuring. this 100% rules out vaporware. unfortunately people require some sort of proof before taking the word of strangers.
Well they aren’t really strangers to the public. They are well known game developers. And people do have hands on proof. It was taken to PAX where people could examine the machine and play it for themselves.
Not really much reason for a group of people to spend money hosting a website, buying t shirts, traveling to conventions, etc for something that isn’t real. I could understand your skepticism if they were asking for money, but they aren’t. The whole reason they have to be tight lipped now is because they are now funded by a partner and the implications of this partnership will be detailed later.
They were going to do a Kickstarter and take public money, but they cancelled that because they don’t need public money now.
Just give it up , rip your own games and play them on freely available emulators with some easily available USB adapters for controllers.
I had forgotten about that system. Thanks for the reminder.
No it does not! Obvious games like Phantasy Star IV and Road Rash don’t work!
But making those would require actual money and hard work to make from scratch, and hyperkin can’t just steal emulators as easily that will run on crappy hardware for that along with circumventing the BIOS. They also can’t just take the cheap Chinese crap clones and scratch out the part numbers to pretend they are their own either because those don’t exist. Hyperkin doesn’t do anything it can’t profit off of the work of others for. Even their Gameboy just looks like it’s based off the current Chinese case molds and backlights with oem parts inside.(like the screen)
