Bleacher Report tweeted today that the Paris Olympic bid committee might add eSports as a gold medal event for the 2024 Olympic games. ESports is a tournament run by professional gamers in which multiplayer video games are played competitively for viewers—typically in large sports arenas. Some of the games that are competitively played include; Quake, Marvel vs. Capcom, and even Tetris. However, the most popular eSports game tournaments gravitates towards League of Legends.
The Paris Olympic bid committee’s co-President, Tony Estanguet, told the Associated Press that he is currently in talks with eSports representatives. Estanguet stated:
“I don’t want to disappoint … I feel there is an urgency to deliver promises, we feel this responsibility since the beginning when we launched this bid.”
Let’s hope that the likes of Sega franchises such as Virtua Fighter and Virtua Tennis make it to the eSport 2024 Olympic games. Maybe even Sonic Mania would make a good contender? Start honing your skills!
