SEGA has dropped a ton of Sonic Boom news today, taking the wraps off both the Wii U and 3DS versions of the game. The Wii U version is known as Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, and the 3DS version is called Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal.
Rise of Lyric will focus on action-adventure and exploration while Shattered Crystal will be more about platforming and puzzle solving. Players who own both games will be able to collect items in the 3DS version to unlock special content in Rise of Lyric.
The Sonic gang will be up against a new series’ foe named Lyric, a “giant and monstrous snake-like creature from an ancient race,” read SEGA’s blog post. “An extremely tech-savvy mastermind who uses a sophisticated robotic body of armor to carry out his own nefarious deeds, he is a formidable enemy and a force to be reckoned with.”
Throughout your journey in both games, you will try to stop Lyric from “powering his army of robots and carrying out his plan to destroy the world,” the post continued. “The stakes have never been higher, and the only chance to overcome Lyric is to band together and work as a team.”
SEGA confirmed the games will each have separate storylines, while Rise of Lyric will feature a new ability called Enerbeam, an “energy-charged cord” that enable players “to swing or zip-line across gaps, explore alternate paths, grab and throw enemies and take away their shields in combat.”
The post specifically mentioned Sticks will be a playable character in the 3DS version but didn’t mention the Wii U version, so we’re unsure if this means you’ll only be able to play as sticks in Shattered Crystal.
