Relic open to new Warhammer title if Games Workshop allows it

Relic Entertainment has said that it is open to working on future Warhammer titles, if the franchises owner, Games Workshop, allows it.

Following THQ’s bankruptcy earlier this year, Relic was bought by SEGA for $26.6million. Part of the deal secured SEGA with the rights to allow Relic to continue working on the Company of Heroes franchise, with Company of Heroes 2 due out in June.

However, Relic was also well-known for working on the Warhammer franchise of games, including the RTS series Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War and the criminally under-sold Warhammer 40k: Space Marine (seriously, Space Marine is one of the most surprisingly brilliant games I’ve played this generation).

Anyway, in a recent talk with Eurogamer, Relic Entertainment’s Quinn Duffy clarified the situation regarding Warhammer:

“Dawn of War, because it’s a license and it’s owned by Games Workshop, they have the opportunity to work that license with whoever they want. I would hope it would be us again. We had a great working relationship with Games Workshop. Sega is establishing one now with the fantasy license for Creative Assembly.

“There’s a strong possibility we’ll all be working together again on Dawn of War.”

Before THQ’s closure, Relic was planning Dawn of War 3, but the financial failure of its parent company put a stop to any solid development. But, maybe, just maybe, if Games Workshop gives the ‘ok’, we might see a new Warhammer game published by SEGA.

  1. Would LOVE to know what will be the outcome of the beloved-underdog, Warhammer: Age of Reckoning, the MMORPG that has been live online through Games Workshop and Mythic/EA for the past 5-years. Did SEGA buy this also? The warhammeronline.com website merely lists an ‘end of licensing from Mythic’, and nothing more. Is Sega going to pick up and host the servers after December 18, 2013, for this game – or is it being mothballed?

      1. It’s still available online as Free-to-Play for now, and for all those who have never played it, they should try it – far better than World-of-Warcraft ever dreamed of being. More like ‘Halo3′ set in Lord-of-the-Rings’ era. That they think they are going to ‘make it better’ by making it into a silly digital board game, like ‘Rome’, is insane. SEGA, keep the same form and format as Mythic/EA has now, and fix the bugs – carry on the legacy. Those of us who pay $15 a month for our memberships aren’t going to fork out money for a ‘Rome-equivalent’.

        1. It is with great sadness that I say, Warhammer: Age of Reckoning, is no more. What was, probably one of the best MMORPG’s of all time, was shut down at 6:00PM Dec. 18, 2013. I can gladly say, I was their until the last ‘Waaagh’. For those who never played it, I must say, you missed a great game. For those who did, through all the arguments of ‘what it should have had, or not had’, chances are, you will miss it too. Goodbye WAR, you will be missed.

          1. I agree, that last bout of battles up until 5 minutes before the game ended were amazing.. .I’d not seen that many online in a long while. I actually found myself this Christmas break lamenting not being able to play it. BUT, one industrious player has an emulation of it evidently running on a server in beta status at the moment, completely free.

  2. Please!!!! Dont Kill Warhammer online: Age of Reckoning. This is the best MMO ever to exist. All of us are terrified we will lose our accounts and all our investment over the years. This game can be made better with a good programming team. We are counting on you Sega.
