Assault Suit Leynos Reboot in Development
On March 7th Dracue Software announced a reboot to the cult Mega Drive shooter Assault Suit Leynos for current generation home consoles. The small indie developer used the BitSummit event in Kyoto to showcase the work they had done on bringing a title from 1990 into modern gaming; showcasing their prototype using several demonstration machines on the show floor.
The ressurection of Assault Suit Leynos follows the last two entries in the series: Heavy Machine Soldiers Leynos 2 and Assault Suits Valken on the Saturn and Playstation 2 respectively. While only the Playstation game was ever released in the west, you may remember a game called Target Earth on Sega Genesis. This was the name of Assault Suit Leynos on Genesis, followed by Cybernator on Super Nintendo which acted as a sequel.
The release of Assault Suit Leynos exclusively on Playstation platforms is another step that Sony has been taking since before the launch of the Playstation 4 to be a leader in indie game development and release. The game itself was showcased amongst other high profile Japanese developed indie games such as Mighty No. 9 – the kickstarted Mega Man successor spearheaded by series co-creator Keiji Inafune.
Unfortunately, as the game is still in a prototype stage Dracue isn’t in a position to provide a release date, however due to the transparent nature of Dracue’s development process so far it shouldn’t be long until we know it.
